Marc Potts (born 1963 in London) is a British artist and illustrator working within the fantasy, myth and folklore genres, using both traditional technique and digital art. He lives close to the edge of Dartmoor, Devon with his wife Kelly Potts Martinez who is a jewellery creator, sculptor and taxidermist. Potts states that he is inspired by the landscape of Dartmoor and 25 years of spiritual exploration; he is also a writer, children's illustrator and natural history artist. His art has been featured in various magazines and books on fantasy art, art tutorial subjects, cards, T-shirts and licensed products.
Potts began his career as a natural history artist due to his early work with various environmental organisations and a degree in Marine Biology from Swansea University, but his art later was inspired by British mythology. He had an article in issue 47 of Imagine FX magazine, and provided book illustrations; both covers and internal illustrations. In 1999 he joined with other artists to create BVAG (British Visionary Artists Group) which exhibited as a group across Britain until disbanding some years later.
For many years Potts was represented by the USA-based Duirwaigh Gallery. In 2010 he was one of 26 artists who exhibited as part of the Sir Lanval Shared Legends Project, a European funded project of Le Centre de l'Imaginaire Arthurien and The Chagford Filmmaking Group. This brought together artists and sculptors, (thirteen French, thirteen British) to honour the connection, both historically and mythically between Devon and Brittany.
In 2000 Potts wrote his first book, The Mythology of the Mermaid and Her Kin, a study into the folklore, history and sightings of mythic sea and water creatures. Dragons, his second book, was published in 2011. In 2012 and 2013 he worked with the Russian neo-classical band Caprice on their limited edition albums Girdenwodan 1 and 2, creating cover art and all internal illustrations for a collectable art booklet. In 2013, 2014 and 2015 Marc Potts was accepted as an exhibitor at Illuxcon, a juried annual exhibition of fantasy and imaginative realism art held in the U.S.A.
