Critical reception
Longstaff fiction combines genres and figurative-related fairy tales and magic, often offset by modern settings and humor.
Her books Fairytale Hairdresser have been described as giving a "new round to traditional fairy tales" and as 'fairy tales [s] with a twist'. The Guardian calls them much more nuanced and subversive than they appear on the surface and they are known for their positive representation of diversity and multiculturalism.
Longstaff books for older children use historical references, and complex literary elements such as footnotes and non-fiction material, along with "brave and intelligent and inspirational" characters.
