Plot
Botticelli has created 102 images based on Dante's Inferno which illustrates Dante's vision of Hell. One of those pictures, the Hell Map, shows the suffering of those cursed souls at various levels of Hell, analyzed by art experts and their conclusions are presented in the film.
When film director Ralph Loop saw the Botticelli exhibition in Berlin and London in 2015, he became so fascinated with the Hell Map that he decided to make a movie about it. In Ron Howard the Inferno , Hell Map is displayed briefly as a projection on the wall, while Ralph Loop's film is dedicated to checking the map and its history in detail.
The film tries to explain what motivates Botticelli to draw the Hell Map, and, thus, to uncover the dark, and less well-known, Renaissance masters renowned for the painting of Venus's Birth and Primavera .
This image is about 30 to 40 centimeters and in the film is examined by a German art historian who wears gloves in an air-conditioned vaulted safes in the Vatican. A letter from Friedrich Lippmann, director of Kupferstichkabinett Berlin, which in 1882 brought 85 of 102 Botticelli drawings to the museum, also featured in the film. High-performance digital scanners are used in movies to reveal details on maps that the human eye can not see.
