Dragon Ball (Japanese: ??????? , Hepburn : Doragon B? ru ) is a Japanese media franchise created by Akira Toriyama in 1984. The initial manga, written and illustrated by Toriyama, is serialized in Weekly Sh? nen Jump 1984-1995, with 519 individual chapters collected into 42 tank? bon volume by Shueisha publishers. Dragon Ball was originally inspired by the classic Chinese novel Journey to the West. The series follows the adventures of the protagonist, Son Goku, from his childhood to adulthood as he practiced martial arts and explored the world to search for seven balls known as the Dragon Ball, which summoned a hoping dragon when assembled. Along the way, Goku made some friends and fought with various criminals, many of them also looking for Dragon Balls.
The Dragon Ball Manga has been adapted into two anime series produced by Toei Animation: Dragon Ball and Dragon Ball Z, which are jointly broadcast in Japan. from 1986 to 1996. Nineteen animated theatrical films based on the Dragon Ball series have been released in Japan. Dragon Ball Z is well known, and is often criticized for, because of his long, repetitive, protracted fights that span several episodes, with Martin commenting "DBZ is practically turning fights into an art form." However, Jason Thompson of io9 explains that this stems from the fact that the anime is made alongside the manga. Dragon Ball Z is listed as the 78th best animated show on the Top 100 Animated Series IGN, and is also listed as the 50th largest cartoon in the Top 100 Greatest Cartoons magazine Wizard list.
Harris commented that the Dragon Ball GT "is a true repellent", mentioning that matter and character have lost their novelty and pleasure. He also criticized the character designs of GT from Trunks and Vegeta as silly. Zac Bertschy of Anime News Network also gave negative comments about GT , mentioning that the fights of the series are "very simple childish exercises" and many other more prominent anime. The Dragon Ball GT plot has also been criticized for providing a formula already used in its predecessor.
The first episode of Dragon Ball Z Kai earned an audience percentage rating of 11.3, in front of One Piece and behind Crayon Shin-chan . Although the next episode has a lower ranking, Kai is among the top 10 anime in weekly viewer ratings in Japan for most of its escape.
Cultural impact
By 2015, Japan Association of HUT anniversaries officially declare May 9th as "Goku Day" ( ???? , Gok? No Hi ) . In Japanese the numbers five and nine can be pronounced as "Go" and "Ku".
The producer of the Tekken video game series Tekats, Katsuhiro Harada, says that Dragon Ball is one of the first works to visually depict chi and thus influence Tekken > and other Japanese games like Street Fighter . Masaaki Ishikawa, art video game director of Arms, said that his art style was strongly influenced by Dragon Ball and Akira .
Ian Jones-Quartey, producer of the American animated series Steven Universe , is a fan of Dragon Ball and Dr. Degenerate , and use the Toriyama vehicle design as a reference for itself. He also stated that "We're all big Toriyama fans at [ Steven Universe ], which show little." In addition, Canadian mixed martial artist Carlos Newton dubbed his fighting style "Dragonball Jiu-Jitsu" as a tribute to this series.
Unofficial live action movie
The Mandarin Mandarin film that was in unofficial live action of this series, Dragon Ball: The Magic Begins, was released in Taiwan in 1989. In December 1990, an unofficial live-action Korean movie Dragon Ball: Ssawora Son Goku, Igyeora Son Goku was released.
