Gary McLain is a former American college basketball player at Villanova University.

High school and college careers

McLain was a highly recruited point guard at Methuen High School. His high school coach, Bill Donlon, is his legal guardian. He was recruited by several college programs and chose to attend Villanova and was part of a recruitment class heralded by Villanova Wildcats in 1981 featuring Ed Pinckney and Dwayne McClain, all of whom had the collective nickname "The Expansion Crew". His basketball career lasted from 1981-1985 and played point guard. McLain graduated with a degree in Communication Arts.

McLain started the point guard in the 1985 squad that defeated Georgetown University, 66-64 to win the NCAA title of the well-liked Hoyas. This game is widely regarded as one of the greatest NCAA tournaments of all time. This game is featured in Frank Fitzpatrick's The Perfect Game .

After Villanova

McLain was elected in the seventh round of the 1985 NBA draft by the New Jersey Nets and later selected by Wildwood Aces from the United States Basketball League, but did not play for both teams.

He works as a recruiter with TLA Consultants.

In the March 1987 issue of Sports Illustrated, Gary McLain revealed that he has been using drugs since junior high and started a cocaine habit when in Villanova. He also admitted using cocaine before the victory of Final Four Villanova over the state of Memphis, but declared that he did not use drugs before the 1985 national championship game against Georgetown.
