Paul Gustave Louis Christophe DorÃÆ'Â © ( ; French: Ã, [ ? ys.tav d?.? e] ; January 6, 1832 - January 23, 1883) are French artists, graphic artists, illustrators, comic artists, caricaturists and sculptors who work primarily with woodcarvings.

Biography

DorÃÆ'  © was born in Strasbourg on January 6, 1832. At the age of five, he was an outstanding artist, creating a mature image beyond his age. Seven years later, he started carving stones. At the age of fifteen Dorà © started his career working as a caricature for French paper. Le Journal pour rire ,. In the late 1840s and early 1850s he made several comic texts, such as Les Travaux d'Hercule (1847), Trois artistes incompris et mÃÆ'  © content (1851 ), Les DÃÆ'  © s-agrà © ments d'un voyage d'agrÃÆ'  © ment (1851) and L'Histoire de la Sainte Russie (1854). Dorà © then went on to win a commission to portray scenes from books by Cervantes, Rabelais, Balzac, Milton and Dante.

In 1853, Dorà © was asked to illustrate Lord Byron's works. The commission was followed by additional work for British publishers, including the new pictorial Bible. In 1856 he produced twelve folio sizes of The Legend of The Wandering Jew, which propagated the old anti-Semitic view of time, for a short poem made by Pierre-Jean de BÃÆ'  © ranger. from the 1845 Eugène Sue novel.

In the 1860s he illustrated the French edition of Cervantes's Don Quixote , and the description of the knight and bodyguard, Sancho Panza, has become so famous that it affects readers, artists, and the next stage and film. the idea of ​​the directors of the physical "look" of the two characters. DorÃÆ'Â © also illustrates a great edition of Edgar Allan Poe's "The Raven", a business that earned him 30,000 francs from Harper & Ladies and Gentlemen in 1883.

DorÃÆ'®'s illustration for the Bible (1866) was a great success, and in 1867 DorÃÆ' © had a great exhibition of his work in London. In 1869, Blanchard Jerrold, son of Douglas William Jerrold, suggested that they work together to produce a thorough portrait of London. Jerrold has gained ideas from The Microcosm of London produced by Rudolph Ackermann, William Pyne, and Thomas Rowlandson (published in three volumes between 1808 and 1810). DorÃÆ'  © signed a five-year contract with the publisher, Grant & amp; The co involved was living in London for three months of the year, and he received £ 10,000 a year for the project. Dorà © especially celebrated for his paintings of his day. His paintings remain famous in the world, but his woodcuts and engravings, as he did for Jerrold, is where he really excels as an artist with an individual vision.

The completed book, London: A Pilgrimage , with 180 carvings, was published in 1872. The film enjoys commercial success and is popular, but his work is disliked by many contemporary critics. Some of these critics are concerned with the fact that Dorà © seems to focus on the poverty that exists in this part of London. Dorà © accused by The Art Journal "created rather than copying." The Westminster Review claims that "DorÃÆ'  © gives us a sketch where the most common, most vulgar external features are set." The book was financially successful, however, and DorÃÆ'  © received a commission from other British publishers.

Dorà ©'s work, which later includes illustrations for the new edition of Coleridge Rime of the Ancient Mariner, Milton Paradise Lost, Tennyson Idyll of the King , > The Works of Thomas Hood , and The Divine Comedy . DorÃÆ' ©'s work also appeared in the weekly newspaper The Illustrated London News.

DorÃÆ' Â © was never married and, after the death of his father in 1849, he continued to live with his mother, illustrating the book until his death in Paris after a brief illness. The cemetery of PÃÆ'¨re Lachaise the city contains his grave. At the time of his death, he was working on an illustration for the Shakespeare drama. The French government made it a Chevalier de la LÃÆ' Â © gion d'honneur in 1861.
