Synopsis

The story begins with the phrase, "One morning in May, five little dachshunds were born." Among the five puppies is a dachshund man dubbed Pretzel. Though mediocre at first and almost indistinguishable from the rest of the garbage, Pretzel soon became unusually long, much longer than his siblings. He grew to be the longest dachshund in the world, earning a blue ribbon on a dog show. Pretzel is so long that he can rotate his body into his namesake.

Its physical length and strength attracted the attention and praise of humans and dogs, except for one female dachshund named Greta. Pretzel was beaten by Greta who lived across the street and who was not impressed by Pretzel's length; she claims that she "does not like long dogs." Despite Pretzel's attempts to seduce him with gifts, he continues to endure his affection.

While watching Greta from afar, Pretzel witnessed Greta's crash that fell into a dry water well. The well was too deep for Greta to escape alone, but not so deep to keep Pretzel dug into the well circle with her hind legs, lowered her body into the well and extracted it with her teeth through the nape of her neck.. It was after his rescue that Greta restored Pretzel's affection, agreed to marry him despite its length and the story ended with the same line and many of the same illustrations that opened the story except for "five little dachshunds" in this case belonged to Pretzel and Greta.

The story was re-published in 1997 by Houghton Mifflin.
