Joyner was composed by the Philadelphia Eagles in the eighth round (208 overall) of the 1986 NFL Draft. He was completely cut off in the training camp, but the Eagles again signed it later this season. Joyner played in the NFL for the Philadelphia Eagles (1986-1993), Arizona Cardinals (1994-1996), Green Bay Packers (1997), and Denver Broncos (1998). The unique combination of Joyner's strength and speed enabled him to excel in all categories of defensive statistics and propelled him to three Pro Bowl awards; selected in 1991, 1993 and 1994. In one of Monday's Football matches in 1991 against Houston Oilers, Joyner, playing with a 102-degree fever, recorded eight single tackles, two forced mistakes, two simple recovery and two sacks. He was named NFL Player of the Year by Sports Illustrated in the same year and received a runner-up award for Defensive Associated Press NFL of the Year, while a member of the Philadelphia Eagles. He won the Super Bowl XXXIII as a member of the Broncos in 1998-1999, which turned out to be his last game.

He is one of the many members of the 20/20 Club for interception and sack in NFL history. He is the second in the sack behind Ted Hendricks (60.5) with 52.

Joyner is currently a soccer analyst at FS1.
