Histori

The original title of the magazine, Monthly Popular Frank Leslie , was published in 1876 and renamed Leslie's Monthly Magazine in 1904, and later renamed to Magazine Leslie in 1905. From September 1905 to May 1906 it was called American Illustrated Magazine ; then shortened to The American Magazine until the publication ceased in 1956. This continuous numbering of volumes throughout its history.

In June 1906, journalists muckraking Ray Stannard Baker, Lincoln Steffens and Ida M. Tarbell left McClure's to help create The American Magazine . Baker donated an article using the nickname of David Grayson. Under John Sanborn Phillips, who served as editor until 1915, the monthly magazine was far from the muckraking style and focused on humanitarian stories, social issues and fictions. Originally published by Springfield, Ohio, Phillips Publishing Company, then taken over by Crowell Publishing Company in 1911, and then joined Collier's . The American Magazine was published by Crowell-Collier until it was folded in 1956.

Editor

With the change in 1915, the periodic editor was John M. Siddall (1915-23), and expanded his market by concentrating on female readers. The cover of 1917 September edition announces: "The Circulation of this Magazine Has Double Multiplied in 20 Months." The cover of 1922 September states the circulation has reached 1.8 million.

Merle Crowell served as editor of The American Magazine from 1923 to 1929 when Sumner Blossom took over. Blossom, who has been editor of Popular Science, was there for the last 27 years of the magazine's existence. Fiction and short stories are popular features, and the magazine publishes several award winners of the O. Henry Award. High profile authors contribute articles on various topics.

During its editing, Blossom adopted an extraordinary policy to hide the author's name on all the fictional works during the selection process as a way to encourage new fiction writers. The magazine staff studied the writer's identity only once they accepted or rejected a script.

The last edition of The American Magazine was featured in newsstands in August 1956.
