Thorn and Michael Gershman have been packing books for other publishers since the late 1980s, most notably their baseball encyclopedia, Total Baseball. Thorn and Gershman called their company "Baseball Ink."

The couple joined the Internet news company KOZ, Inc. to form Total Sports in 1998. The new company is headquartered in Raleigh, North Carolina, and headed by George Schlukbier. The publishing division of Thorn took root in his hometown of Kingston, New York, while Gershman headed for the corporate office in Manhattan on Park Avenue.

This merger proved to be a fateful arrangement. The dot-com bubble blast caused the two companies to break up after less than two years. Thorn led the purchase of publishing division management during the summer of 2000. Raleigh-based web business was bought by a San Francisco-based Internet company, Quokka Sports. Both new Thorn and Quokka Sports ventures will declare bankruptcy in 2002.
