The 1974 NCAA Volleyball Men's Tournament was held at the UC Santa Barbara campus, and UC Santa Barbara was a heavy favorite to win it. UCLA made it to the NCAA tournament by disappointing Southern Cal in their district playoffs. The tournament's previous four tournament finals from round robin play for nursery followed by a single elimination playoff was dropped in 1974 to go straight into a single elimination playoff. The tournament field remains limited to four teams. In the semi-final UCLA beat Ball State in straight sets while UCSB beat Springfield in straight sets, setting up a UCLA championship final, UCLA, with eternal power, against UCSB's top spot.
The championship game is a matter of back and forth, with UCSB beating the Bruins in Game 1 and 3, while UCLA takes game 2 and 4. Many of Bruin's murders come from high tempo in the attack, with UCLA Bob Leonard taking the quick set off of Jim Setes setter. In the fifth game, Gauchos climbed 6-1 before the Bruins bounced back with six straight points to lead 7-6. Both teams continue to exchange assassinations, with UCLA maintaining a slim edge to take the championship by a margin: 10-15, 15-8, 10-15, 15-11, 15-12. Leonard, Menges and Mike Normand are named for the All-Tournament team. UCLA ended the 30-5 season. It was the fourth championship in five years for the Bruins. Menges earned an All-American award in his senior year at UCLA.
With the win, UCLA has won its fourth national title.
Bob Leonard of UCLA was named the Most Extraordinary Player of the tournament.
