Black Butler (Japanese: ??? , Hepburn: Kuroshitsuji ) is a Japanese manga series written and illustrated by Yana Toboso. Since its debut on September 16, 2006, it has been serialized in the Square Enix manga magazine sh? Nen Monthly GFantasy .

The series follows Ciel Phantomhive, a thirteen-year-old boy (in chapter 14) head of the Phantomhive family, an aristocratic family known as the Queen's Guarddog. He was assigned to finish the crime in the world of London. Ciel has formed a contract with Sebastian Michaelis to take revenge against those who tortured him and killed his parents. Sebastian is a demon who has been disguised as a servant, and instead of his services, he will be allowed to consume Ciel's soul. The series has been licensed by Yen Press in North America and published in the August 2009 edition of "Yen Press ' for the magazine's first anniversary.

The 24-episode anime adaptation, with 3 seasons, directed by Toshiya Shinohara and produced by A-1 Pictures, aired from October 2008 to March 2009. The second season, Kuroshitsuji II, aired in 2010 starting 12 episodes with two new main characters, Alois Trancy and Claude Faustus, following the first season. This series has an original storyline and does not feature manga content. A live action film adaptation was released in Japan on January 18, 2014. The third anime series, titled Kuroshitsuji: Book of Circus , was aired between July 10 and September 12, 2014. A two-part OVA theater titled Kuroshitsuji : Book of Murder Played in Japanese theaters on October 25, and November 15, 2014. An animated film for the series, titled Kuroshitsuji: Book of the Atlantic, aired in Japan on January 21, 2017 and in America in June 2017.

Plot

In Victorian London lived a young boy named Ciel Phantomhive. Ciel lives with his rich parents in a British manor. On the night of his tenth birthday, Ciel finds his mother, father, and dog dead and surrounded by fire. The fort was on fire, and he was caught by the worshipers. He was sold by his captors, and then marked on his stomach called the "beast" sign. After experiencing a month of torture and embarrassment, Ciel involuntarily summoned a demon and signed a contract with him. He calls Sebastian's demon a childhood dog. Ciel returns to Phantomhive's home with a mysterious black-clad butler, Sebastian Michaelis. For others, it seems that the butler is the best in his skills, ranging from anticipating the needs of the young master to bring them to his extraordinary, seemingly limitless abilities.

Actually, Sebastian is actually a devil, and in exchange for the child's soul, the devil will help him take revenge on those who have wronged him. As a Queen's keeper and standing on the top of the UK, Ciel broke the evil that struck London while awaiting the day of his retaliation.

Manga

Written and drawn by Yana Toboso, chapters of Black Butler have been serialized in the manga shi nen magazine Monthly GFantasy since its debut in the October 2006 edition. These chapters are also published in volume collected by Square Enix. The first volume was released on February 27, 2007 and on May 27, 2017, twenty-five volumes have been released. Yen Press licensed the series for an English release and made the manga series in the August 2009 edition of Yen Plus ' for the magazine's first anniversary. The publisher released its first volume in January 2010. The second volume was released in May 2010. The French publisher, Kana, licensed this series under the trail of Dark Kana as Black Butler. The publisher released its first volume in November 2009. Carlsen Comics has licensed the series in Germany as the Black Butler , the same title used for the French and English releases. Black Butler has also been published in Italy by Panini Comics. In Poland, Waneko publishes the manga as original Kuroshitsuji with the subtitle Mroczny kamerdyner in February 2013, nine volumes have been released. The series has been published in Finland under the original Japanese name Kuroshitsuji by Punainen jÃÆ'¤ttilÃÆ'¤inen since July 2012. In Spain, this series has been published in Editorial Norm since November 2011 under the title of Black Butler . The series is in progress.

Drama CD

On August 10, 2007, the drama CD was released by Frontier Works. It displays many characters that appear in volumes one and two. The second drama CD was released on November 26, 2008 under the Aniplex label.

Anime

In July 2008, it was announced that the anime adaptation of Black Butler, directed by Toshiya Shinohara and produced by A-1 Pictures, is expected. It aired in October 2008 and aired on MBS as well as TBS. On January 1, 2009, a limited edition DVD containing the first episode was released by Aniplex. The next three episodes were released on another DVD on February 25, 2009. At the show on June 14th, 2009, it was announced that the anime would be back for the second series. Japanese voice actor Junichi Suwabe confirmed the news on his official blog that day. The second series, Kuroshitsuji II , aired in July and followed a butler, Claude Faustus, and his master, Alois Trancy, and Sebastian and Ciel. The two new characters were designed by Toboso.

On March 29, 2010, North American anime distributor Funimation Entertainment announced in their FuniCon 3.0 online panel that they have licensed Black Butler. At Anime Expo 2010, Funimation also announced that they will be streaming the simulcast series, Black Butler II. Funimation announced on their Facebook page that they have fully licensed the second season. Funimation released the first Black Butler Combo Pack Blu-ray/DVD and the second season on April 3, 2012. The series made its North American television debut on February 8, 2011 on Funimation Channel.

On January 16, 2014, it was announced that Black Butler had been given the go-ahead for another anime adaptation. Unlike most of the previous seasons, the third series is a close adaptation of the original manga storyline, adapting the Ark Noah Ark's bow and titled Kuroshitsuji Circle Book . The series was directed by Noriyuki Abe in A-1 Pictures, with Hiroyuki Yoshino in charge of the script, along with Ichiro Okuchi and Yuka Miyata as scriptwriters. The main actor of the anime series previously returned, along with new cast members, and the series aired from July 10, 2014 to September 12, 2014. In addition, two parts of the OVA entitled Book of Murder, adaptation of the bow Phantomhive Manor Murders , playing in Japanese theaters on October 25 and November 15, 2014.

On August 7, 2014, Funimation announced that it has licensed the third season of the series, and has streamed it on their simulcast. Funimation released the series on Blu-ray and DVD on April 19, 2016. In addition, Funimation has licensed the two-part OVA and released it on May 17, 2016.

Musical

Butler's, Friendship ( ??????? , Sono Shitsuji, Y? kya ), a musical adaptation of the manga, has been running at the Sunshine Theater in Ikebukuro between May 28, 2009 and June 7, 2009. Yuya Matsushita plays Sebastian Michaelis, Shougo Sakamoto plays Ciel Phantomhive and Uehara Takuya as Grell Sutcliff.

Black Butler Music: The Most Beautiful Death in the World - A Thousand Souls and a Falling Grim Reaper ( ?????????????? ??????????????????? , Mi? jikaru Kuroshitsuji - Za M? suto By? tifuru Desu at za W? rudo - Sen no Tamashii to Ochita Shinigami), the second musical adaptation of the manga, ran at the Akasaka Act Theater (1300 seats) in Akasaka, Tokyo, Nagoya, and Osaka, between May 3 and May 23, 2010 Yuya Matsushita imitated his role as Sebastian Michaelis, Yukito Nishii acting as Ciel Phantomhive, and Uehara Takuya modeled on his role as Grell Sutcliff. The other two main characters, Eric Slingby and Alan Humphries, were photographed by Taisuke Saeki and Matsumoto Shinya, respectively. It was announced in February 2013 that Yuya Matsushita, Uehara Takuya, and Shuhei Izumi will repeat their roles as Sebastian Michaelis, Grell Sutcliff, and Undertaker, respectively. A re-run of the third Black Butler music " Lycoris the Blazes the Earth " is scheduled to perform in November-December 2015. It will premiere in Osaka on November 7th then travel to Miyagi, Tokyo and Fukuoka. The new release of the third musical will also be going on its first overseas tour in China (Shanghai, Beijing, Shenzhen) in December 2015. Yuta Furukawa replaces Yuya Matsushita as Sebastian Michaelis, who has played Sebastian since the first musical performance. Meanwhile, most players from the third music repeat their roles.

Movies

It was announced on January 18, 2013 that the manga will be made into a live action film starring Ayame Goriki as Genpou Shiori, Hiro Mizushima as Sebastian Michaelis. The filming starts in April 2013 and the film was released on January 18, 2014. However, once released, it was greeted with negative reviews.

On October 10, 2015, it was announced an animated film for the series has been in green-lighting, and the original anime cast will return to re-show their role. On February 17, 2016, the now-titled Black Butler movie Book of the Atlantic has been confirmed to be an animated adaptation of the Luxury Liner ( ???? , G? ka Kyakusen ) comes from the original manga. The album was released in Japan on January 21, 2017. On April 1, 2017, FUNimation announced that they have licensed the animated film and will filter it in a limited theatrical release in North America later this year.

Reception

Black Butler has sold over 24 million copies worldwide, 6 million outside of Japan. Individual volumes alone are good in weekly polls in Japan, taking some high places. In addition to volume, the seventeenth comic anthology Rainbow Butler during the week of 31 March to 6 April sold 41,083 copies after ranking thirty three weeks earlier. The fourth and fifth volumes occupy the thirty-third and thirty-nine positions of the best-selling manga in Japan during 2008, each selling 529,210 copies and 468,550 copies. The sixth volume was ranked thirteenth best selling manga in Japan during the first half of 2009, selling 619,501 copies. The series alone was ranked tenth of the best-selling manga series in Japan during 2009, selling a total of 1,603,197 copies of the forecast. The series is also quite popular in other countries.

Japanese music distributor, Recochoku, has made an annual survey about the anime character that people want to marry. Sebastian Michaelis ranks ninth in the category "Character Who Wants To Be My Bride".

On February 2, the film has grossed Ã, Â 479,554,245 (US $ 4,687,163) at the Japanese box office.
