Biography
Blahnik was born and raised in Santa Cruz de la Palma, in the Canary Islands (Spain). His father was an Austrian-Hungarian. His Spanish mother's family owned a banana plantation in the island town of Santa Cruz de la Palma. She studied at home when she was a child. As an adult, he attended the Swiss boarding school. Later, his parents wanted him to become a diplomat, and enrolled him at the University of Geneva majoring in Politics and Law. However, Blahnik changed its majors into Literature and Architecture. In 1965, he earned his degree and moved to Paris to study art at the ÃÆ'â ⬠cole des Beaux-Arts and Stage Set Design at the Louvre Art School, all while working at a vintage clothing store. In 1968, he moved to London to work as a buyer at the fashion boutique "Zapata" and write for L'Uomo Vogue , an Italian version of Vogue .
In 1970, Blahnik had the opportunity to meet Diana Vreeland, editor-in-chief of U.S Vogue, as she traveled in New York. He then presented the fashion portfolio and set the design to Vreeland, at which point he looked straight into his eyes and said, "Young man, making things, making accessories, making shoes." She admires her shoe sketch and advises her to concentrate on designing footwear. Blahnik followed his advice and worked on designing shoes.
In 1972, Ossie Clark invited him to make shoes for runway performances. Also, he designed shoes for other fashion designers in London, such as Jean Muir and Zandra Rhodes. With a loan of £ 2,000, Blahnik bought Zapata from its owner and opened its own boutique. In 1974, Blahnik became the second person ever to appear on the cover of England. Vogue (after Helmut Berger). In 1977, he sold his shoes in America, through Bloomingdales, and opened his boutique in the US. Since then, he has become a very famous shoe designer, and a pure classic style symbol for the 21st century.

Initial development
One of Blahnik's greatest inspirations is his mother. She studied fashion magazines and interpreted the latest fashion trends in her clothes. Blahnik and his family often travel to Paris and Madrid to order clothes. Her mother was always dissatisfied with the shoes from her hometown, so she made them herself. He learned the basics of his craft from a local baker on Canary Island and as a kid, Blahnik loved watching his mother when he made beautiful shoes. She inherited her mother's love of brocade and satin and told her how, as a boy, she found a shaft filled with shoes by the famous Russian Yanturni which were all made of silk, antique lace and brocade trimmed with fine buckles. Everything is light, elegant and feminine; Blahnik attributes are then taken to their own designs.
When Blahnik entered university, he lived with his aunt and uncle. Meanwhile, her aunt strongly influences her fashion sense. He perfected his tastes and learned to appreciate the beauty of luxury, art, and happiness. Blahnik remembers that according to his aunt, "happiness is to have one of the most elegant bags ever made, in every available color."
Shoes
Blahnik never studied shoe making officially. He learns skills by visiting a shoe factory and talks with pattern cutter, technicians and machine operators. Initially, he designed men's footwear, but he soon discovered that the design of a man's shoes limited his imagination and lacked fashion elements. When mainstream shoe styles were still dominated by clumsy platforms in the 1970s, he revived the slender stiletto heels, which has since become a classic. In addition, he does not like wedges and believe in heel strength and sex appeal that they convey.
Blahnik has worked wholeheartedly in his shoes. He not only drew the design of a pair of shoes, but also the craft of the shoe itself. He carved the last wood, which he then chiseled into the shoe. When the time comes for mass production, he oversees every step of the way to make sure every shoe is an exact copy of his original creation. He always kept every design: 25,000 shoes were arranged in date order in the various cabinets filling two adjoining houses on a Georgian terrace in Bath.
Just like the incredible fashion style, Manolo Blahnik's shoe style is kept to a small exclusive production number and its signature style is easily recognizable.
