Sphere: Illustrated Newspaper for Home and, later, Sphere: Weekly Illustrated Empire , is a British newspaper, published by London Illustrated Newspapers Ltd. every week from January 27, 1900 until the close of the newspaper on June 27, 1964; the first problem arose at the height of the Boer War and was undoubtedly the product of the conflict and the public's appetite for the picture. At that time, it was in direct competition with The Graphic and Illustrated London News , and evidence of this competition can be seen in the last publication shortly after a new pictorial paper titled The Spear in an attempt to confuse readers. During World War I, weekly issues were called 'war numbers' and more than two hundred emerged between 1914 and 1919. Overall, it amounted to 3,343 problems, plus a special supplement issued in December 1964, titled Winston Churchill: A Memorial of Tribute
The Sphere was founded by Clement Shorter (1857-1926), who also founded Tatler in the following year. It includes general news from the UK and around the world; many features of foreign news are reported in detail because the title is targeted at the British citizens living in the colony. It's similar to Illustrated London News , another paper that contains many graphic illustrations. What's featured in The Sphere is by famous artists including W. G. Whitaker and Montague Dawson. Other illustrators include Sidney Paget, Henry Matthew Brock, Fortunino Matania, Ernest Prater, Edmund Blampied and Claude Grahame Muncaster (1903-1974); photographers include Christina Broom (1862-1939); and the authors include Bryher, Eleanour Sinclair Rohde, and Michael Wolff.
The short story of Thomas Hardy A Changed Man was first published in The Sphere, in two installments in the 21 and 28 April 1900 editions. During World War I, the newspaper was purchased by the king delivery of John Ellerman. The Sphere was very popular during World War II.
The British Library and the National Library of Scotland store copies of all publications of this newspaper.
