Adobe InDesign is a desktop publishing software application manufactured by Adobe Systems. It can be used to create works such as posters, leaflets, brochures, magazines, newspapers, presentations, books and ebooks. InDesign can also publish content appropriate for tablet devices along with Adobe Digital Publishing Suite. Graphic designers and production artists are key users, creating and publishing periodicals, posters, and print media. It also supports exporting to EPUB and SWF formats for creating e-books and digital publications, including digital magazines, and content suitable for consumption on tablet computers. Additionally, InDesign supports XML, style sheets, and other code markup, making it suitable for exporting flagged text content for use in other digital and online formats. The Adobe InCopy word processor uses the same formatting engine as InDesign.

History
InDesign is the successor to Adobe PageMaker, which Adobe acquired by purchasing Aldus in late 1994. (Freehand, a competitor to Adobe Illustrator and also created by Aldus, was sold to Altsys, the maker of Fontographer.) By 1998 PageMaker had lost almost the entire professional market to QuarkXPress 3.3 which was relatively feature-rich, released in 1992, and 4.0, was released in 1996. Quark declared its intention to buy Adobe and to release the combined PageMaker company to avoid anti-trust issues.
Adobe declined the offer and instead continued to work on the new page layout app. The project was started by Aldus and codenamed "Shuksan". It was then codenamed "K2" and released as InDesign 1.0 in 2000.
In 2002, InDesign was the first genuine Mac OS X desktop desktop (DTP) software. In version 3 (InDesign CS), it gets a boost in distribution with bundled with Photoshop, Illustrator, and Acrobat in Creative Suite.
InDesign export document in Adobe Portable Document Format (PDF) and has multilingual support. This is the first DTP app that supports Unicode for text processing, advanced typography with OpenType fonts, advanced transparency features, layout styles, optical margin alignment, and cross platform scripting using JavaScript.
Later versions of the software introduced a new file format. To support new features, especially typography, introduced with InDesign CS, neither the program nor the document format is backward compatible. Instead, InDesign CS2 introduces the INX (.inx) format, XML-based document representation, to allow backward compatibility with future versions. The updated InDesign CS version update 3.1 April 2005 can read files stored in InDesign CS2 exported to format.inx. The InDesign Interchange format does not support earlier versions of CS InDesign. With InDesign CS4, Adobe replaces INX with InDesign Markup Language (IDML), another XML-based document representation.
Adobe developed InDesign CS3 (and Creative Suite 3) as a universal binary software compatible with original Intel and PowerPC Mac machines in 2007, two years after the announced 2005 schedule, making it difficult for early Intel-Mac users. Adobe CEO Bruce Chizen has announced that "Adobe will be the first with a full range of universal applications". The CS2 Mac version has code that is tightly integrated into the PPC architecture, and is not natively compatible with Intel processors in Apple's new machines, so porting the product to other platforms is more difficult than anticipated. Adobe developed a CS3 application that integrates Macromedia (2005) products, rather than recompiling CS2 and simultaneously developing CS3.
InDesign and Leopard
InDesign CS3 initially has serious compatibility issues with Leopard (Mac OS X 10.5), as Adobe says: "InDesign CS3 may suddenly stop when using the Place, Save, Save As or Export commands using the OS or Adobe dialog box. there is a solution to this known problem. "Apple fixes it with OS X 10.5.4 update.
Server version
In October 2005, Adobe released InDesign Server CS2, a modified version of InDesign (without the user interface) for Windows and Macintosh server platforms. It does not provide any editing clients; but for use by developers in creating client-server solutions with InDesign plug-in technology. In March 2007, Adobe officially announced Adobe InDesign CS3 Server as part of the Adobe InDesign family.

The newer version can be as a rule of opening files created by the old version, but otherwise not true. The current version can export InDesign files as IDML files (InDesign Markup Language), which can be opened by InDesign version from CS4 upwards; Older versions of CS4 can be exported to INX files (InDesign Interchange format).
Internationalization and localization
InDesign editions of the Middle East come with special arrangements for composing Arabic or Hebrew texts. They feature:
- Text settings : Custom settings for compiling Arabic or Hebrew texts, such as:
- Ability to use Arabic, Persian or Hindi numerals;
- Use kashidas for letter spacing and full justification;
- Ligature options;
- Adjust diacritic positions, such as Arabic writing vowels;
- Justifies the text in three ways: Standard, Arabic, Naskh;
- Options to include special characters, including Geresh, Gershayim, Maqaf for Hebrew and Kashida for Arabic texts;
- Apply standard, Arabic or Hebrew styles for page numbering, paragraphs, and footnotes.
- Two-way text flow : Right-to-left behavior ideas apply to multiple objects: Stories, paragraphs, characters, and tables. This allows mixing words from right to left and from left to right, paragraphs and stories in the document. You can change the direction of a neutral character (eg./Or?) According to the user's keyboard language.
- Table of contents : Provides a set of table of contents of the title, one for each supported language. This table is sorted according to the selected language. InDesign CS4 Middle East version allows the user to select the index title language and cross reference.
- Index : Allows the creation of simple keyword indexes or index information somewhat more detailed in text using indexing index code. Unlike more sophisticated programs, InDesign can not enter character style information as part of an index entry (for example, when indexing a book title, journal or movie). Index is limited to four levels (top level and three sub-levels). Like the table of contents, the index can be sorted according to the selected language.
- Importing and exporting : Can import QuarkXPress files up to version 4.1 (1999), even using Arabic XT fonts, Arab Phonyx or Hebrew XPressWay, retaining layout and content. Includes 50 import/export filters, including Microsoft Word 97-98-2000 import filters and traditional text import filters. Export IDML files that QuarkXPress 2017 can read.
- Inverted layout : Include layout features to reverse the document layout, when converting left-to-right document to right-to-left or vice versa.
- Complex script rendering : InDesign supports Unicode character encoding, with Middle Eastern editions supporting complex layout of text for intricate types of Arabic and Hebrew scripts. The underlying Arabic and Hebrew support is present in the Western editions of InDesign CS4, CS5, CS5.5 and CS6, but the user interface is not exposed, making it difficult to access.
