" Circle of Life " is a song from Disney's 1994 animated film The Lion King . Composed by Elton John, with lyrics by Tim Rice, the song was performed by Carmen Twillie (lead female vocalist) and Lebo M. (opening Zulu vocals) as the opening song of the movie. In an interview, Rice said she was amazed at the speed with which John composed: "I gave him the lyrics at the beginning of the session around two pm At half past three he finished writing and recorded a stunning demo." Elton John sings a pop version (with alternative lyrics ) of the song with the London Community Gospel Choir, which was included in the soundtrack of the film and made into a music video. "Circle of Life" was nominated for an Academy Award for Best Song in 1994, along with two other songs from The Lion King: "Hakuna Matata" and "Can You Feel the Love Tonight" that won the prize.
The song reached No. 11 in the UK and No. 18 in the United States and is often featured in attractions based on The Lion King , such as Disney theme parks and parades. Michael Crawford sang it as part of the medley for the The Disney Album in 2001.

Theatrical version
Act Me
In a theater adaptation, the opening sequence feels different from the opening of the film. For example, a song is sung by Rafiki, not a female narrator off the screen.
With the sun rising over Pride Ground, Rafiki begins the start of production by singing the opening song and summoning the animals in Pride Land for Simba baby presentations. When the first two verses of the music number end, the Pride Rock representation appears on stage carrying two powerful rulers, Sarabi carrying a small doll representing his son in his arms with Mufasa beside him. As the choir rejoiced in the background, Rafiki accompanied the two kings to the top of Pride Rock to bless the baby before lifting him high in the air, singing merrily to the choir as the animals gathered prostrate before their new prince.
Act II
At the end of the second half, Simba's friends and family acknowledged him as legitimate king after Scar's defeat. Rafiki crowned Simba with a king robe after his victory and Simba climbed to Pride Rock. There he provided a great roar that echoed throughout the kingdom, and the animals returned to the Praise Land to recognize and pay tribute to Simba as legitimate king. Musical ends when Rafiki presents newborn Simba and Nala to all animals, followed by a blackout that ends the Act II and leads to a curtain call at the end of the show.
The assembly of animals that appear slightly different from the beginning of Act II. There are no wildebeest and adult elephants, only two zebras, not three, three gazelles, not four, and half of birds, not four. Just baby elephants, rhinoceros, giraffes, three storks, cheetahs, and birds that appear as poles on a crane as a kite.

Music version
As happens with the movie, when the music was translated into another language, the song was also translated. The version below is publicly available through a cast record of each production. In popular culture
Due to the influence of this film on popular culture, the song "Circle of Life" is often referenced in other media.
The opening for The Lion King was parodied in a 1990 cartoon episode of Animaniacs, where the theme "Circle of Life" was parodied with "Surprise in Life", with vocals by Jim Cummings and Cree Summer as the lead singer.
The Tenth Doctor finds himself unconsciously quoting "Circle of Life" during a confrontation with the Sycorax leader in 2005 Christmas special of the revived Doctor Who series "The Christmas Invasion".
In one of Disney's many references, "The Circle of Life" emerged as the false start of the Chicken Little movie, when Buck tried to open the movie. In the 1998 film Bug's Life Hopper explained to the Flit colony that his protection in exchange for food was one of the "Circle of Life" sort of deals.

Disney's Epcot Park currently features a cinema type movie called "Circle of Life: An Environmental Fable" from 1995 with Timon, Pumbaa, and Simba discussing environmental topics at Walt Disney World Resort as well.
At the White House Correspondent's Speech of 2011, President Barack Obama jokingly stated that he would be showing his long-form video, spoofing the earlier controversy about refusing to show his long-term birth certificate to prove that he was actually born in the United States. The opening singing is played from the film, and Simba looks lifted to the sky. This is used to mock allegations of Kenyan heritage that Obama alleges.
New York Mets outfielder Yoenis Cespedes started using this song as his music during the 2016 MLB season.
The Japanese band Da Pump recorded a cover version of the song in 2003.
It was used in the pilot of the Modern Family when Mitch and Cam introduced Lily to the family.
On May 28, 2017, the song was used at the Stadio Olimpico during Francesco Totti's farewell, after an AS Roma winning match against Genoa C.F.C. for 3-2.
