Wright was born in Newhaven, England in 1963. He graduated from Brighton College of Art in 1986. Wright developed watercolors and children's books based on wildlife in the early phases of his career. In 1989, he published a self-written and illustrated picture book for children titled "When the World Sleeps" (Hutchinson). It was runner-up in the Mother Goose Award competition, 1989-1990. He follows this by two very successful illustration projects - "Crumbs!" (Hutchinson, 1990) and Tanglewood Troll (Gollancz, 1993).

Illustration Harry Potter

Bloomsbury approached Cliff Wright to illustrate the cover of the first English edition of Harry Potter's second book. The cover illustration for the first book was drawn by Thomas Taylor, a young artist from a college. The popularity of the first book decided on Bloomsbury to choose a more experienced illustrator, and therefore Cliff Wright was elected. Wright is an obvious choice for the third Harry Potter book cover illustrator as well.

Wright is the first to illustrate the following concepts and characters of Harry Potter:

Harry Potter and the Chamber of Secrets (1998):

  • The owl is the hut
  • Weasleys' Ford Anglia
  • School of Magic and Magic of Hogwarts

Harry Potter and the Prisoner of Azkaban (1999):

  • Buckbeak hippogriff
  • Sirius Black in the form of his dog

Wright retains the rights to the illustrations. He refused to portray the fourth Harry Potter book after Bloomsbury lost his original front and back artwork to Harry Potter and the Azkaban Prisoners. The enormous dark market of Harry Potter fandom has been rumored to be the cause of that loss. He also sued Bloomsbury for offering inadequate compensation.

Original artwork for Harry Potter's second book and Chamber of Secrets continued the auction at Christie's in 2001 but failed to meet the reserve price of Ã, Â £ 30,000. This work has been acquired by investor Luke Heron on behalf of the investment illustration company, Storyboard Assets Plc, for an undisclosed amount. The original art for the first book raised Ã, Â £ 85,000 at an auction.
