Croquis drawing is a quick and vague picture of life model. Croquis pictures are usually made within minutes, after which the model changes pose or leaf and another is taken.
Short duration of benefit model poses because they do not need to be silent for a long time; this also benefits the artists as it helps them concentrate on the important elements of the pose, or the most important part of the image. An artist does not have time to draw all the details, so they learn to concentrate on important elements. Croquis is also a method of drawing good subjects that are generally not silent and posing, such as insects, animals, and children.
After the initial sketch, croquis images can be used as a foundation for other artworks such as paintings or can be used as works of art itself.
The word croquis comes from French and means "sketch".
In fashion, the term refers to a quick sketch of a figure (usually nine heads high because this is the accepted proportion for fashion illustration) with a loose image of the underwear being designed. Often a large number of croquis images will be made for one finished view, which is fully drawn and finished.
