  • Substantial changes to the text have been introduced in addition to fixing typos.
  • Publishers print basic designs for the first time.
  • The design of the jacket or dust cover has been greatly changed.
  • The height or width of the book has changed.
  • The binder has changed.

Criteria for variant

For this list, printing is a separate edition variant if both are not separate editions themselves and also any of the following criteria are met:

  • Unclear signs or annotations say it comes from a different publisher of an edition identical to (for example, a book club edition).
  • Some internal illustrations appear as colors, not black-and-white, or vice versa.
  • Several minor changes have been made in the design of the book or binding or the dust coat without affecting the overall design.

Printing is a separate 'not' edition or variant solely because of the following:

  • The color of the binder changes.
  • The color scheme of the dust jacket changes but the design remains the same.
  • Typographical error is corrected.
