Biography

John Howe was born in Vancouver, British Columbia. He drew from pre-school age, with the help of his mother for his "more ambitious rendering". Around the age of primary school he finds his mother's abilities no longer meet his expectations, and even feels very frustrated at mother and herself for not being able to draw a cow for her wishes. Howe's school years were complicated by the movements that occurred with the time that made the art classes full, and left them in classes like power mechanics. He found his ability as a draftsman to be profitable in a biology class, where he and a friend would render microscopic organisms to classmates at fifty cents each. As a child, he collects the cover of a novel. The collection includes items from Frank Frazetta, Barry Smith, and Bernie Wrightson. In his teenage years, Howe reads The Lord of the Rings trilogy from J. R. R. Tolkien. He says he gets a "real spark" from the Hildebrandt calendar, which shows him that the books can be illustrated. Howe creates pictures of his own version depicted in the calendar. These images, according to Howe, may not have survived.

A year after his high school graduation, Howe found himself in Strasbourg, France attending college. The following year, he enrolled into ÃÆ'â € cole des arts dÃÆ'Â © coratifs. He quotes his experience from this period as follows:

"The first year was spent not much understanding, the second contrary to what I managed to understand, and the third was eager to get out, though in retrospect I must owe whatever clarity my thinking has to the professor's illustration of his patience."

Throughout his first years in Europe, Howe took as much as he could on the street of art, architecture and everything that was "simultaneously old and new." He says the only surviving artwork of this period is "Lieutenant Black Tower Barad-dÃÆ'» r ", a piece inspired by Tolkien, The Lord of the Rings . He said if this was not his first published work, it must have been the earliest. The first commissions of Howe included political cartoons, magazine illustrations, comics, animated films, commercials, which he said were nightmares. He says that he will repeat the sketch so many times that nothing remains of his "possession" in it. This frustrates him, and he wonders how he will succeed in his profession.
