Artistic Career

Henningsen became part of the Bogstaveligheden group, a forum for Realist humanitarian ideals about creating a better society through illumination and debate.

In his paintings from the 1880s and 1890s, Henningsen was busy with the rights and living conditions of groups such as unemployment, women, workers, children and the elderly. Examples are Summum juice, summa injuria. The infanticide (1886, The Hirschsprung Collection and Evicted (1892, Danish National Gallery).

He also described the lighter aspects of human life, as in the paintings of street life in Copenhagen.

Towards the turn of the century, Henningsen especially depicts historic sights. An example is the murals in the hall of banquet of the main building of the University of Copenhagen at Vor Frue Plads in Copenhagen. It describes the banquet at the Scandinavian Scientist Conference held in Roskilde in 1847. It completed a series of murals depicting the history of the university whose earlier paintings had been made by Vilhelm Marstrand, Carl Bloch and Vilhelm Rosenstand.

During the first two decades of the twentieth century, he mainly painted genre works from the life of the bourgeoisie.

Illustration and decorative work

Henningsen also works as an illustrator, both for Ude og Hjemme's weekly magazine and books such as Pietro Krohns Peters Jul (1914).

In 1900, Tuborg Brewers announced a competition for "decorative ad posters" to mark 25 years of its jubilee. The first prize, which was rewarded with a DKK of 10,000, was taken by Jens Ferdinand Willumsen, but in the end the Henningsen entry, known as The Thirsty Man, was put into production by the brewery. Since then, icon status has become an icon and is one of Denmark's most recognizable posters.
