Fashion Illustration is the art of communicating fashion ideas in visual form derived from illustrations, drawing and painting and also known as fashion sketches. It is mainly used by fashion designers to brainstorm their ideas onto paper or computers, using digital software such as Adobe Photoshop and Illustrator, which helps them to communicate easily with their team. Sketch mode plays a major role in designing to view and visualize the mind of the designer and make decisions before going to the real outfit to reduce waste.

In addition to fashion designers, fashion illustrators get the task of reproduction in fashion magazines as part of an editorial feature or for the purpose of advertising and promoting fashion makers, fashion boutiques and department stores.

History

Illustration mode has been around for almost 500 years. Since the clothes have been there, and there is a need to translate ideas or pictures into fashion illustrations. Not only fashion illustration shows garment representation or design but also serves as an art form. The fashion illustration shows the presence of the hand and is said to be a visual luxury. (Drake, 9).

Recently, there was a decrease in fashion illustrations in the late 1930s when Vogue began to replace the famous picture envelope with photographic images. This is a major turning point in the fashion industry. Laird Borrelli, author of Fashion Illustration Now stated,

Fashion Illustration has changed from being the only mode of communication mode to have a very small role. Vogue's first photographic cover was a turning point in the history of fashion illustration and its mark of decline. The photographs, no matter how modified or retouched, will always have some connection to the reality and truth of the association. I like to think of them [Fashion Illustrations] as poetic prose and have more fictional narratives. They are more clearly filtered through individual vision rather than photographs. The illustrations continue to live, but in a relatively poor position against fashion.

Mode Illustration Process

A designer begins by inspiring and brainstorming ideas for rough sketches on sketches. These rough sketches are then transferred to croquis and given to fashion sketches that apply textures, colors, patterns and details with the help of art materials.
