Plot

At Nipigon Lake, Canada, a Native boy carved a wooden model from First Nations people in a canoe. At his side he carved the words "Please return me to the water, I Row-to-Sea" and set him free to explore the Great Lakes into the Atlantic Ocean. This story follows the progress of the First Timberlings in their journey. This trip of the Nipigon River is wedged in a log, and saved by French-Canadian loggers as it happens under a saw. He returned it to the water. It was taken several more times, but the inscription was always obeyed. Once a man discovers a very shabby inscription and adds metal plates with similar words. When the canoe runs, those who send it on their way scrap their location on a metal plate. Across the five Great Lakes (including across Niagara) and St. Lawrence. Finally after many years, he arrived in Newfoundland in the Atlantic Ocean. There it was taken for the last time in the net of French trawlers in Grand Banks, and taken to France. His long journey was written in French newspapers. The copy arrived at a sawmill on the Nipigon River, sent from France by a tree cutter cousin. Coincidentally, the original creator, now a grown man, works there as a local guide and he also sees newspapers. He acknowledges his work, but does not interest him, and the book ends with the words of his pride, spoken only to himself.

Each canoe movement is celebrated with a short chapter, perfect for reading aloud to a child and adorned with black-and-white sketches and at least one full-length watercolor, all by the author. These sketches accompany larger stories and narrative narratives narrating themselves: for example, a sketch shows how sawmills work by visually deciphering the progress of logs into a mechanical saw.

Usually from his time, this book uses the Indian word to describe both the model creator and his creation.
