Production

Rosi chose 1875 for the period and was filmed entirely on location in Andalusia, using Ronda and Carmona and Seville himself to simulate Sevilla in that era. He works with his old collaborator, cinematographer Pasqualino De Santis, and with Enrico Job watching the sets and costumes. Rosi admitted the illustration of Gustave DorÃÆ' © © to Baron Charles Davillier Spanish (published in serial form in 1873) as its main source for visual design. He believed that the Bizet, who had never visited Spain, was guided by these engravings, and shot scenes in several exact places that DorÃÆ' Â © drew.

Critical reception

Pauline Kael reviews the film well in the collection of his film reviews, State of the Art :

Julia Migenes-Johnson's mottled, Carmen gamine is the ultimate glory of production. She paced, her dark hair, messy, kinky - her sexual availability - pulled Don Josà ©  © and drove her crazy. Carmen, who is faithful to her instincts, represents everything she tries to press. But after he leaves the Army and loses the honor which means everything to him, he thinks he owes his mind for the rest of his life. Carmen's mistake was to think she could think of her as a lover in her own way.
