Madden NFL (originally known as John Madden Football until 1993) is a series of American football video games developed by EA Tiburon for EA Sports. It's named Pro Football Hall of Famer John Madden, and has sold over 120 million copies, and has influenced many players and physical exercise coaches. Among the realistic features of the game are sophisticated playbook and player stats, and voice comments that allow players to hear the game as if it were a real TV broadcast. In 2013, the franchise has generated more than $ 4 billion in sales.

The founder of Electronic Arts, Trip Hawkins, compiled this series and approached Madden in 1984 for his support and expertise. Due to Madden's insistence that the game should be as realistic as possible, the first version of John Madden Football did not appear until 1988. EA has released an annual version since 1990, and the series name is changed to Madden NFL in 1993 after EA gained the right to use NFL teams and players. Although Madden retired as a broadcaster in 2009, he continued to lend his name to provide expertise for game franchises.

Ikhtisar

In 2013 Electronic Arts has sold more than 100 million copies of Madden NFL, and more than five million in a year, for more than $ 4 billion in total sales. At EA Tiburon in Orlando, Florida, a team of 30 developers and over 100 game testers work on every new game in the series, which in 2012 contains more than 10 million lines of source code.

Madden, better known for Ace Hardware ads than football despite winning the Super Bowl XI with Oakland Raiders, is now better known as Madden NFL than as a coach or broadcaster. He receives about $ 2 to 3 million annually for his approval but describes himself as "never a good player" of Madden, and prefers watching others play. Although Madden says that "the computer is much smarter than me" he has influenced the series design of the first game, and since retiring from broadcasting and videogame videogame comments in 2009, his participation in each of Madden has grown:

He breaks the change of the rules to come. He's carrying a concussion, a helmet-to-helmet attack and a quarterback gimmick. An aberration about how the Patrol Saints were used to thwart Bill Walsh's team of 49ers with short linebacker drops into a lecture on fullback absence, which then turned short in addition to the player character.

EA estimates that this series has five to seven million dedicated fans, and the underground circuit of the Madden money tournament exists. Marshall Faulk in 2010 estimated that "50 percent above" NFL players were Madden players, who played in league with or against childhood heroes whom they had chosen to play as in the game. Players usually play as themselves regardless of the ability of their electronic counterparts and immediately check out new releases of the game for a change in over 60 ratings of their talents. They often complain to Madden and EA about the allegedly inaccurate rankings (only Emmitt Smith tells her that the game ranked too high), or ask for a change in their in-game appearance. Such complaints began in 1990, confusing the broadcaster, which did not contribute to player statistics for that year's version due to lack of time.

Coaches and players at all levels of the sport say that Madden has influenced them, and recommended games to learn strategies and football tactics, practice play and tasks, and simulate opponents. The young players who grew up with it reportedly understood to play better than those who did not. Wired in 2010 linked the use of novice quarterbacks and spreading violations to the game, stating that "sport is taken over by something you might call Maddenball - advanced skills, high scores, -happy, phenomena driven by young man ". When Brandon Stokley, the Denver Broncos in 2009 burned a six-hour clock with an unusual run before scoring the winning goal against Cincinnati Bengals architect Madden - who watched the game with Madden - immediately recognized his action as "what happened inside game!"

The football broadcast on television uses Madden as a visual cue to be more like it, and the NFL considers this series the "33rd franchise" because every week during the EA Sports season receives the same searchable movie database every playing that each of the 32 league teams do. This game is the second largest source of NFL license revenues after garment, and an important part of recruiting league children as new football fans.

Pro Football Hall of Fame in 2003 opened an interactive exhibition where visitors played Madden , three years before the namesake of namesake. The Moving Image Museum in New York City in early 2014 celebrated Madden NFL's 25th birthday ', with an exhibition including five playable versions of the game.

Voice comments

Voice comments in Madden allow players or observers to listen to the game being called as if it were a real game on TV. For early versions of this game, this comment was made by Madden himself and his playful partners. Initially, this was Pat Summerall, his colleagues during their days on CBS and Fox from the early 1980s to early 2000s until Summerall retired; the role was later filled by Al Michaels, John's broadcasting partner on ABC Monday Night Football (2002-2005) and NBC's Sunday Night Football (2006-2008). For the first Madden games on Xbox 360 and PS3, they feature a generic EA Sports radio broadcaster that performs play-by-play. It starts with Madden 06 and ends with Madden 08 . Other versions of the games still feature Madden's comments. Madden NFL 09 will end up being the last version to display Madden's comment, albeit in a reduced role. At the time, he felt that reading a script that included every scenario in the game was boring and boring - Madden recalled the long hours spent alone in the recording studio as "the hardest part of any part I ever had in the game and the least bit of fun" - but said that in the decision to remove it from the game commentary, "I feel there is something taken from me".

Madden and Michaels were replaced by Cris Collinsworth as color commentator and Tom Hammond in play-by-play at Madden NFL 09 and Madden NFL 10. Gus Johnson replaces Hammond at Madden NFL 11 and Madden NFL 12, with Collinsworth handling color comments in both games. Madden NFL 13 marks the real life announcement debut team Jim Nantz and Phil Simms, including those who appeared on a bouncing cutscene before the game. Nantz and Simms stayed until the Madden NFL 16, when they were replaced by Brandon Gaudin and Charles Davis for the Madden NFL 17. Gaudin and Davis return to the studio throughout the NFL 2016-17 season to add relevant new comments for each week of the season.

In the same approach used by the automotive industry, to Madden NFL 25, the Madden series is always historically numbered one year later than the year it was released. However, the season he represents is the year in which the game was released (thus, Madden NFL 13 was actually released in 2012 and modeled after the 2012 NFL season).

Series overview

1980s: Creation

Hawkins's journey creates an imitation of Strat-o-Matic paper and a football-based simulation game as a teenager. The game was not successful because of its complexity, and he hoped one day delegated his rules to the computer. At Harvard College, where Hawkins played football for Crimson, he wrote a soccer simulation for a PDP-11 mini computer which, he estimated, estimated that the Miami Dolphins would beat Minnesota Vikings 23-6 (actually 24-7) in the 1974 Super Bowl. After establishing Electronic Arts in 1982 - "The real reason I found [that] was because I wanted to create a computerized version of the game like Strat-O-Matic", Hawkins then said - the company started designing a game of micro soccer. Hawkins first approached his favorite player Joe Montana to support the proposed game but the quarterback already has a support deal with Atari Inc., and second choice, coach Cal Joe Kapp, demands royalty.

In 1984 Hawkins approached Madden. He and game producer Joe Ybarra arranged a follow-up meeting with the broadcaster during Amtrak's two-day train journey due to Madden's fear of flying. The EA executive promises that the proposed game will be a sophisticated football simulation, and asks the retired Oakland Raiders manager for his support and expertise. Madden does not know anything about computers outside his phone but agrees; he has taught classes at the University of California, Berkeley called "Football for Fans", and envisions this program as a tool for teaching and testing dramas. (Madden continues to see the game as an educational tool When asked in 2012 to describe Madden NFL he calls it "a way for people to learn the game and participate in the game at a fairly sophisticated level".) Hawkins and Ybarra train travel learns to play football and strategy from Madden from sunrise to midnight.

EA most likely expects Madden to support the game without participating in his design. The original plan envisioned six or seven players per team due to technical limitations, but Madden insisted on having 11 players, stating "I did not mention my name if it was not real." Ybarra, who has played chess instead of football, is in high school, becoming an expert on the subject through his work, but found that 11 players overwhelmed contemporary home computers. Most pending projects such as Madden are canceled; Ybarra and developer Robin Antonick need three years, more than twice the average length of the development process. The project was known within the company as "Journey of Folly", and Madden believed at the time that the EA had surrendered.

The company hired Bethesda Softworks to complete the game, but this only made them achieve their goals. While EA uses many of its designs, including contributions to their physics engine, within a year Bethesda stopped working on Madden and demanded EA for the failure of EA to publish a new version of Bethesda's Gridiron! soccer match. This adds a delay. After a final development drive, John Madden Football debuted in 1988 for the Apple II computer series. Hawkins and exhausted Ybarra ("All my sick memories") can move to another project.

EA had a copy of the 1980 Raiders guidebook, and hired the author of the San Francisco Chronicle, Frank Cooney, who had designed his own figurine football game with numerical skills ratings. Although the company has not been able to legally use a team name or NFL player, Cooney has gained a real game from the NFL team. The back of the box is called the game "Real First Soccer Simulation" and quotes Madden: "Hey, if there are not 11 players, it's not real football." Documentation includes diagrams of dozens of offensive and defensive dramas with Madden's comments on strategy and training philosophy. The game is sold well enough but considering its sophisticated playbook interface is very complex, and Madden's insistence on 11 players causes the game to run slowly.

During this period, Madden rejected the opportunity to buy "unlimited" options for EA shares in an initial public offering, a decision which he later called "the stupidest thing I ever did in my life".

1990s

In early 1990 EA hired Park Place Productions to develop Madden for Sega Genesis game video consoles. Park Place has developed ABC Monday Night Football with "arcade-style, heavy-action" game play, and the Madden also emphasizes hyperreality compared to the computer's focus on the right simulation. Impressed by Park Place's work, EA chose it for Genesis Madden instead of completing an in-house version by Antonick.

EA reverse engineered console to sell the game without paying a standard $ 8 to $ 10 per cartridge license fee for Sega, then proposes a compromise of $ 2 per cartridge and $ 2 million cap on fees. Console makers agree, afraid that EA will sell its reverse engineered knowledge to other companies; the agreement saved EA $ 35 million over the next three years. Since his self-supported Joe Montana football game will miss the 1990 Christmas shopping season, Sega asks EA to let him sell Madden with Montana. EA refused, but offered an inferior alternative that lacked 3D Madden graphics and most of its 113 games. Joe Montana Football sold well despite being shipped after Christmas 1990, and remained popular after BlueSky Software took over the development. John Madden Football for Genesis, however, became the first successful game Madden - sold 400,000 copies when the company estimated 75,000 - and the first killer app for EA and Sega, helping the console gain market share against Super SEN.From 1992 to 1994, Mega put the game at # 1 in their monthly Top 100 Mega Drive Game of all time.

In 1990, EA producer Richard Hilleman brought in veteran sports game designer Scott Orr, who has founded the mid-1980s GameStar game publisher Commodore 64 and has led the design of their bestselling sports game. Orr and Hilleman's teams designed and led the development of what is today still recognizable as modern Madden. Early versions of Madden were created by external development studios such as Bethesda, Visual Concepts, and Stormfront Studios. John Madden Football '92 also features an ambulance that will run over the players in his path. After the Visual Concept failed to deliver the new Madden NFL '96 for the new PlayStation in 1995, EA hired Tiburon Entertainment for Madden NFL '97 and then acquired the company, centralized in-house development. The plan was to release John Madden Football as the first sports-based arcade game, but the game was canceled due to an unenthusiastic reaction from the testers playing. EA's refusal to release Madden's Madden and other sports titles for Dreamcast in 1999 contributed to the lack of console success and Sega's release of the hardware market.

Franchise Mode

In 1998 Electronic Arts added "Fashion Franchise" to Madden , giving players the ability to play several seasons, make off-season season picks, and trade players. In Franchise Mode, players take on the role of General Manager and manage all personnel issues, including contracts, free agents, draft takings, and recruitment and dismissal coaches. Players also act as head coach characters such as (though there is a figure of the head coach in the game), choose which players to play, make substitutions, practice, gameplans, etc.

Players can play with any of the 32 NFL franchises, and can choose whether or not to have a trading deadline, a pay cap, and if they want to start their Franchise with a 49-lap fantasy draft of all active NFL players. Players can also upload teams created for use in games.

Once in the game, players run training camps (individual exercises to increase player attributes), play in pre-season games and compete in regular 16-game NFL games, including playoffs and the Super Bowl. Players have the option to play any game in the simulation, including those involving other teams if they wish, or can simulate through the games they choose. Most versions of Madden give players 30 years with their franchise, sometimes with an opportunity to propose Hall of Fame at the end of the simulation.

2000s

Madden NFL 2001

Madden NFL 2001 features a segment called "Great Games" where someone will be placed in a situation where they are in control of one team and must win a match with a predetermined time. If a player wins, they unlock either a new team or a stadium. Overall, there are more than 60 teams and more than 80 stadiums at Madras NFL 2001.

Madden NFL 2002

Madden NFL 2002 is shown for the first Create-Team where someone will create a team and play with that team either in Play Now or Franchise mode. It also features a Create-A-League mode but is never caught. The Create-A-Team is not displayed on Madden NFL 13 and the first moving team is shown in Madden NFL 2004 called â € Å"Stadiumâ € in Game franchise mode. Madden NFL 2002 was the 2nd highest selling game in 2002.

Madden NFL 2003

There are several game play modes, from fast head-to-head games to running the team for the entire season or even a few seasons. The online game, which is a new feature for Madden NFL 2003 (in this version also a mini-camp challenge) is only available to PlayStation 2 console users, Xbox consoles, or Microsoft Windows PCs until early 2004.

Madden NFL 2004

Also, starting with Madden NFL 2004 , EA Sports created a new Playmaker tool, using the right analog joystick found on any adjustments that were not previously available in previous installments of the franchise. One such adjustment includes the ability to move in which direction the running game takes place without changing the formation. Before the Playmaker tool, Player can only call one of the four "hot routes" available. With Playmaker and right thumbstick usage, players are given 4 additional Hot Route options. When the quarterback has a ball, the Playmaker Tool can be used to make the recipients change their route in the middle of the game. When running the ball on a foul, the runner can control the direction in which the blocker will. The adjustment of defensive alignment, however, is unavailable leading to a clear imbalance in favor of offensive players.

Madden NFL 2005

In Madden NFL 2005 , EA Sports runs a campaign with Theme "Fear the D" which emphasizes their improvement on "the other side of the ball". In an effort to rebalance the player's experience, EA delivers a Playmaker Tool to defend. Similar to the Offensive Playmaker Tool, the defensive playmaker allows players to make pre-snap defensive adjustments. EA Sports further utilizes the right analog joystick on defense by creating a "Hit Stick", an option on defense that allows controlled players to make great hits, with simple movies, which increases the chance that the ball carrier will miss. Also introduced for the first time was "Shifting Formation." This new feature allows players to change their formations in the pre-snap audible menu without actually changing the game. For example, if you call a run to play the center of the line formation, you can then call the formation shift and make your player spread into four wide receiver formations while still in the same game. The problem with this new functionality is that EA also adds a fatigue penalty for defense that causes defenders to become more tired whenever there is a shift in formation. This causes players who attack several formations to shift each game to make the defenders too tired to follow and force them to get out of the game until they are fully rested. This causes more imbalances that can only be fixed by turning off fatigue.

2005 also added "EA Sports Radio", a fictional show that plays during the Franchise mode menu screen to give a greater sense of the storyline during game play. It features Tony Bruno as the host, who often interviews players and coaches about how the season goes and also has quiz questions where fake listeners call to make an effort to answer questions related to football. This includes mock interviews of well-known NFL players and coaches throughout the in-game season. Some fans have criticized EA Sports for excluding new features for 'programming' because the radio gets stale after only two seasons in franchise mode, but the feature draws praise for adding content to the Franchise menu. Also added is a newspaper where players can see National News from USA Today licensed and Local Licensed newspapers for almost each of the 32 NFL teams. Finally, 2005 also saw the introduction of some progressions during franchise mode. Previously NFL players in Madden will only advance or retreat at the end of each season. Now at the end of Week 5, 11 and 17, the game will use the program to "progress" players based on their performance in addition to the season's end of the season.

Madden NFL 06

At Madden NFL 06 , "Truck Stick" was introduced. This feature allows the offensive player to lower his shoulders and break the tackle, or back juke to avoid it. Another new feature is Superstar Mode , which allows players to control a rookie, and progress through his career. These include IQ tests, interviews, drills, NFL Drafts, hiring agents, and other aspects of a superstar's life.

EA also introduced the Vision QB feature in the 2006 installment. With this feature, the headlight cone radiates from the quarterback as it passes through the play, mimicking the field of vision. To make the feed accurate, the quarterback must have the intended recipient in the field of vision. Passing to the receiver not in the cone reduces the passing accuracy significantly. The size of the quarterback vision cone directly correlates with its Awareness and Passer Accuracy rating; Brett Favre and Peyton Manning see almost all fields at once, while inexperienced quarterbacks like J. P. Losman or Kyle Boller see only a piece of field. This feature is also possible to play larger and more interceptions.

Also, EA sports add Intelligent Routes . This means that when pressing the hot route to the appropriate receiver, you put the analog stick down and the receiver will run down the first down, and you can throw the ball at it.

While the current Madden genes remain the same as the "Smart Route" and "QB Vision" exceptions, this is also the first year Madden was released on the next generation Xbox 360. It was completely stripped down, almost every change made in the previous gene removed.

Madden NFL 07

At Madden NFL 07 , EA introduces Lead Blocker Controls which allows users to control the blocker during game play. In addition, EA redefines Truck Stick into Stick Spotlight . With Spotlight Sticks, users can have running backs running different running and combo movements, not just bending over defenders. The Stick Truck feature still exists for larger backs, but not for smaller backs that will never use them realistically. Instead, a more agile back performs acrobatic ducks and evades to avoid tackle.

Madden NFL 08

At Madden NFL 08 , the Weapons feature is added, allowing superstar players to be noticed. Randy Moss, for example, is Go-To-Guy, allowing him to make a remarkable one-handed fight. Peyton Manning is a QB Franchise. It also includes new skills training, Hit Stick 2.0 feature, and Ring of a Champion. Tennessee Titans quarterback Vince Young on the cover. Madden NFL 08 is also the last GameCube game ever released. The year 2008 marked the last year of the PC version game.

Madden NFL 09

Madden NFL 09 was released on August 12, 2008. Citing business issues, EA chose not to release it on the PC platform. The game features Brett Favre's quarterback on the front cover. Madden NFL 09 is the first of a series offering online, league games, allowing up to 32 players to compete in an online NFL season simulated online. EA Sports Senior Producer Phil Frazier, up to 32 players can participate in competitive games, the NFL Draft and trade among their teams. This game is also the first of the series to incorporate IQ Madden. The Madden IQ is used to automatically measure your skills through a series of mini-games that consist of infringement, offense, defensive running, and pass defense. At the end of each exercise, players receive scores ranging from rookie to all-Madden. The Madden IQ Final is a mix of values used to control game difficulty.

License history and spin-off

License

Until 1993, the Madden series did not have an official license from the National Football League or National Football League Players Association (NFLPA). Madden NFL '94 is the first game in the series to include real NFL teams, and Madden NFL '95 adds NFLPA licenses to real players through National Football League Incorporated (NFLPI) players. Licenses limit EA from including certain content in the current game Madden , such as the funny ambulance that picked up the injured player in 1991 John Madden Football II . The NFL Coaches Association sold the right to have the NFL coach name appear on Madden NFL games; Madden NFL 2001 is the first game in the series featuring this license. Both New England Patriots coach Bill Belichick and Bill Parcells do not appear in the game because they are not members of the NFL Coaches Association. Likewise, non-NFLPA players (such as Thurman Thomas during his playing career) do not appear in the game, instead of being replaced with a generic placeholder.

Exclusivity

In 2004, EA entered into an exclusive license until 2009 with the NFL and NFLPI to give the company exclusive rights to use NFL teams, stadia, and players in a video game. This exclusive license prevents other official NFL game video. The deal, reportedly worth $ 300 million and then extended to 2013, has been heavily criticized. Some competitors, such as the Blitz: The League series, have opted to continue, looking to differentiate themselves through innovative gameplay while others, such as the NFL 2K series , have quit production. In 2007, 2K Sports released All Pro Football 2K8 , which used the former NFL star.

Head Coach series

In August 2006, EA Sports debuted NFL Head Coach , utilizing Madden engine to create a soccer management simulation. The game was criticized as buggy and unrealistic. EA Tiburon rebuilds the game from the ground up, overcomes deficiencies and creates an exclusive machine, for three years. NFL Head Coach 09 was released on 12 August 2008 bundled with a special edition of Madden NFL 09 and as a stand-alone game on September 2, 2008.

Prior to 1998, every annual installment of the Madden NFL series mainly featured Madden on the cover. In 1998, Electronic Arts chose Garrison Hearst to appear on the cover of the PAL version, and has since featured one of the league's top players in every annual installment despite the resistance from Madden. When appearing on the cover has become an honor similar to appearing in the Wheaties box, such as Sports Illustrated Cover Jinx, certain players appearing on Madden the art of video game boxes have experienced performance degradation, usually due to injury. This apparent glimpse of the misfortune to Madden covering athletes has been dubbed the "Madden Curse."

When asked about Madden's Curse, EA Sports' Chris Erb said, "I do not know that we believe in a curse, the players do not believe in the curse." Running back Shaun Alexander, shown on the cover of Madden NFL 07, commented, "Do you want to get hurt and covered, or just get hurt?" Madden NFL 08 Vince Young's cover artist expressed skepticism, while Madden NFL 12 Peyton Hillis's cover artist linked the season beneath that year to a curse.

The perception that the curse is real has resulted in some fans lobbying for their favorite players not to be on the cover, like LaDainian Tomlinson fans who strongly oppose EA Sports's initial decision to show him on the cover of Madden NFL 08, so much so fans created SaveLTfromMadden.com to voice their hatred. Tomlinson eventually rejected the offer, but said it was solely due to contract negotiations. Starting with Madden NFL 11 EA has allowed fans to choose their favorite players for cover. However, EA believes that many fans choose against their favorite players to avoid a recognized "curse". It has become so prominent that bets create opportunities about how likely injury will occur on players who appear on the cover.

The injury that Madden covers the athlete's experience can be attributed to the physical nature of football. Also to get the honor placed on the cover of the game, a player usually comes from a strong year and some regressions in the next year is possible. Associating several causes, such as a curse, this randomness is a false regression and false correlation.

In December 2010, EA announced plans to develop a movie based on Curse, which would be a comedy, and not based on a horror movie based on destiny such as Final Destination . However, EA Entertainment executive Pat O'Brien stated in October 2014 that EA is not working on Madden Curse's film.

Madden Bowl

Madden Bowl

The Madden Bowl is a single elimination tournament held in the latest edition of Madden NFL . It has been held since 1995 during the Super Bowl weekend in the host city and, in the past, participation includes NFL players and celebrities. Madden Bowl's participation has changed over the years from being an event held with athletes, musicians, and celebrities, to being an event where only NFL players invited to participate get the chance to play. Participants in Madden Bowl are free to choose which team they like. Winners receive the Madden Bowl trophy and recognition in the upcoming Madden video game .

The Madden Bowl 2006, held during the Super Bowl XL weekend in Detroit, Michigan, was broadcast on ESPN and aired in April 2006. It is not to be confused with Madden Nation, which is a reality television show that notes a cross country trip to crown the best Madden player in America, which also airs on ESPN.

From 2011 to 2012, the Madden Bowl competition uses the new Online Team Play feature included in Madden NFL 11 . Instead of competing as individuals, players form a group of three players to earn trophies. After this feature is stopped, the Madden Bowl competition continues in Head-to-Head format.

Annual EA Super Bowl Simulation

Since 2004, EA Sports has been running a Super Bowl simulation using the latest games in the Madden NFL series and announcing the results. The game simulation performed by EA has correctly predicted ten of the last 15 Super Bowl winners. The company accurately predicted the final score for the 2015 game and other details, including a 24-14 score that supported Seattle in the third quarter, despite skepticism in the EA that Seattle would lose after a double-digit lead. Predictions are incorrect in 2008, 2011, 2014, 2016, and in 2018. EA also released a description of a computer-made simulation game as if it were a summary of the actual Super Bowl. The results of simulated and actual Super Bowl games are listed below.
