This public annotated bibliography page provides an overview of important and not very important works in English about the sport of fishing, listed in the first year of publication. While not all of the books listed are specifically intended for fishing, these titles contain significant fishing content. The focus of this page is on the classic general text of fishing and its history , along with a collection of public libraries or leading universities dedicated to fishing. .

The purpose of the Fly Fishing Collection at the National Library Collection of the Washington Library of the West is to collect, preserve, and provide access to a variety of materials that support the study of fly fishing sports.

The collection includes books, periodicals, manuscripts, photographs, artwork, personal interviews and audio and video history, and fishing artifacts such as sticks, reels, flies, and fly binders.

Sub-collections in larger fly fishing collections at Western Washington University are the Paul and Ford Fly Fishing Collection that includes

American works on fishing in America of good quality in presentation and physical content. The emphasis of the current collection is on the spiritual, sociological, and aesthetic aspects of fishing. In addition to books, collections include magazines, paintings, prints, sculptures, and sewing. The Fords began transferring the collection to the Western Library's Special Collection in late 2003. It will be transferred gradually and will include new works published on the differences chosen by Ford.

  • Harry Hawthorn Foundation Collection , University of British Columbia, Vancouver, British Columbia

The British Columbia University Library has a collection of books on fishing and fishing, known as the Harry Hawthorn Collection. There are currently over 2,200 books, including many rare and valuable items. This collection emerged as a result of a fishing holiday in 1953 by eight UBC professors and Roderick Haig-Brown at Upper Campbell Lake.

The Milne Angling Collection includes a large number of volumes representing the beginning of the fishing literature. Dame Juliana Berners' A Treaty of Fysshynge wyth an Angle (1496) is considered the first book on a subject printed in England. Although some people question his authorship, Berners, who is a prioress of the Benedictine monastery of Sopwell, occupies the same place in the fishing literature on Chaucer sourced from English literature. The Milne Collection contains several editions of Berners's work from the 1827 edition of William Pickering to the modern version, as published in John McDonald's Quill Gordon (1972).
