The Society of Children's Book Writers and Illustrators (SCBWI) is a non-profit organization, 501 (c) 3 that acts as a network for knowledge exchange between writers, illustrators, editors, publishers, agents, librarians, educators, books and others involved with literature for young people.

SCBWI has more than 22,000 members worldwide, in more than 80 regional branches, making it the largest children's writing organization in the world.

Missions

The Mission of the Society of Children's Book Writers and Illustrators is to promote the appreciation of children's books around the world by fostering a dynamic community of individuals who bring books to young readers to the public, including writers, illustrators, editors, publishers, agents, librarians, educators, booksellers , bloggers, fans and more. SCBWI provides education and support for these individuals through their awards, grants, programs and events. They are trying to improve the quality and quantity of children's books on the market, and act as consolidated voices for professional writers and illustrators around the world.

History

In 1971, the organization was founded as a Society of Children's Book Writers by a group of Los Angeles-based writers, including Group President Stephen Mooser and Executive Director Lin Oliver. Writers Judy Blume and Jane Yolen sit on the original board and continue to be involved today.

In October 1973, details were announced for the Golden Kite Award, the only child literature award judged by a jury of colleagues. Today, awards are awarded annually to recognize excellence in children's literature in four categories: Fiction, Nonfiction, Picture Book Text, and Illustrated Picture Books.

In March 1978, SCBWI announced it would offer a grant that is being worked on to commemorate illustrator and board member Don Freeman. Currently, nearly $ 25,000 in grants are granted annually to SCBWI members.

In 1991, illustrator and board member Tomie dePaola lobbied to officially include illustrators in the organization. and the name was changed to the present: Society of Children's Book Writers and Illustrators.

In 1993, Sue Alexander opened his first office in West Hills, California.

In 1996, SCBWI launched its first website with the help of Bruce Balan.

In 1999, in Paris, France, SCBWI held its first conference outside the United States. Also in 1999, in New York City, SCBWI added the annual Winter International Conference.

In 2010, SCBWI established the Kite Kristal Member Award to recognize great children's literature in 15 regional divisions around the world.

Publications

Bulletin : The SCBWI Bulletin is a bi-monthly publication containing information about children's literature. Features include marketing reports; articles on writing, illustrating, and publishing; contest and award announcement; News members of SCBWI; and ongoing SCBWI activities around the world.

Books : SCBWI also publishes Books , which provides information and references to both published and unpublished authors and illustrators. Publications include specific information about publishers, agents, markets, education programs, contracts, critics groups, and editorial services.

Awards and grants

The Society of Children's Book Writers and Illustrators presents several awards and grants to their members each year including:

Amber Brown Grant: Named in honor of late writer and SCBWI supporter Paula Danzinger, Amber Brown Grants is given to underserved schools with the desire and commitment to enrich their curriculum with visits from an author or illustrator. SCBWI provides full-day visits that are fully paid by a respected author or child illustrator. The selected school also receives $ 250 salary to assist in creating the event and $ 250 worth of books by visiting authors. One or two schools are selected each year.

Book Launch Award: SCBWI Book Launch Award gives two annual awards of $ 2000 per author or illustrator used to market books scheduled for release during the next calendar year. The money can be used for any kind of promotional purposes that will increase sales and book visibility, such as launch events, lectures, book tours, curriculum materials, advertisements, book trailers, website development, or community events.

Crystal Kite Member Choice Awards: Recognize good books from 70 SCBWI areas around the world. Together with the SCBWI Golden Kite Awards, the Crystal Kite Awards are selected by other children's authors and children's illustrators, making them the only award given by peers in publishing to young readers. Each SCBWI member is allowed to select their favorite book from a nominated author in their area published in the previous calendar year.

Golden Kite Award: Given annually to recognize excellence in children's literature in four categories: Fiction, Nonfiction, Picture Book Text, and Illustrated Picture Books. The award-winning author and illustrator receives a paid trip to Los Angeles to attend the award ceremony at Golden Kite Luncheon at SCBWI's Summer Conference in August and a lifetime membership at SCBWI. A memorial posters with the winners will be created and distributed to, among other things, various schools, libraries and publishers.

Merit Magazine Award: Merit Award SCBWI magazine is presented annually for original magazine works for young people. Each year, SCBWI presents four placards, one in every category of fiction, nonfiction, illustration, and poetry, each year to honor the original magazine's member work published that year. The selected works are works that show excellence in writing and illustration, and really attract the interests and concerns of young people. Honors certificates in each category are also given.

Member of the Year: Become a member who has provided outstanding service to the organization.

Portfolio Award: Award for best portfolio on display at Juried Art Portfolio Display at the SCBWI Annual Summer Conference in Los Angeles. The Portfolio Award Winner receives a cost trip to New York to meet with an interested art director.

Sid Fleischman Award: Award for writing exemplars for children in the humor genre. Sid Fleischman was the first recipient of the SCBWI Humor Award, for his broad agency, at the 32nd Annual SCBWI Conference in Los Angeles, in August 2003.

Student Illustrator Scholarships: Each year, four students studying illustrations are selected to attend Summer and Winter conferences with full scholarships.

Sue Alexander's Most Promising New Work Award: Awarded the most promising script to be published at the Los Angeles Summer Conference. Critics nominated the manuscript during the Los Angeles conference. The winner receives a costly trip to New York to meet with an interested editor.

Tomie dePaola Award: Given annually to the promise illustrator Tomie selected himself. The award consists of a $ 1,000 gift certificate for art supplies, plus full tuition, transportation and accommodation to the New York Winter Conference.

Tribute Funds: The SCBWI Tribute Fund commemorates members of the children's books community, their lives and their work by funding a scholarship to the SCBWI International Summer and Winter Conference for general membership.

Work-in-Progress Grant: SCBWI's Work-In-Progress Grant is designed to assist authors of children's books on specific project completions, and is covered by grants from Amazon.com.

Activity

SCBWI sponsors two annual International Conference on Writing and Illustrating for Children each year, the Summer Conference held in Los Angeles, and the Winter Conference held in New York City. In addition, regional branches around the world host dozens of smaller conferences throughout the year, ranging from events devoted to professional writers and/or illustrators for events for people who have just entered this field. Events such as book clubs, book launching parties, book signing, critics groups, gallery shows, KidLit evenings, open studio tours, crawl sketches, writer/illustrator retreats and more happening around the world. Each of about 80 regions is led by a Regional Advisor (RA) volunteer or two co-RAs. Larger areas may also have Assistant RAs and Illustrator Coordinators and advisory committees.

Membership level

  • Associate Members: For anyone with an interest in children's literature, including unpublished agents, editors, librarians, teachers, authors, and illustrators.
  • Full Member: For author or illustrator published (including self-published).
  • Registered and registered members (PAL): For authors or illustrators published by traditional publishers acknowledged by SCBWI.

Contributions for all membership levels are $ 95 for the first year and $ 80 per year next.

Advocacy

As a unified body, SCBWI acts as a powerful force for generating significant changes in the field of children's literature, promoting new copyright laws, fair treatment of authors and artists, censorship and fair contract terms. By 2015 there are over 22,000 members worldwide, in over 80 regional chapters written and illustrated in all genres for young readers from board books to young adult novels (YA), making it the largest children's writing organization in the world.
