Early life and career

Raised in Kane, Pennsylvania, Dick Rockwell was the son of Jerry Rockwell - brother of painter and illustrator Norman Rockwell - and Carol Rockwell. He has a brother, John. Rockwell began his career after World War II, where he served as a US Air Force pilot who flew Allied troops to France on Day-H and into the Ardennes Forest for the Battle of the Bulge. His first known comic book credit is a one page penciling and ink. "Little Knowing [sic.] Facts About Famous Animals" at publisher Fiction House Jungle Comics # 113 (May 1949), and his first known story art is a seven page "The Masquerading Bandits" in the Prize Comics Comics Headline Comics 36 (August 1949).

He continued drawing for Lev Gleason Publications' Unpaid Crime and Black Diamond Western . As Rockwell says, the example of this work, supplied with its membership application to the National Cartoonists Society in 1952, attracted the attention of Milt Caniff, president of the organization at the time. Soon after, Caniff hired Rockwell to help in the classic syndicated newspaper strip of Caniff Steve Canyon , polish and insert a secondary character and background; Caniff writes, draws the main character, and performs the finishing touch. He served as an unidentified art assistant at Canyon for 35 years, continuing for a short time after Caniff's death in 1988.

Rockwell's other comic book work includes at least one story each in 1951 for Comics Man , Comic Girl , Exposed Crime and Susepense , from Atlas Comics, Marvel Comics precursor 1950s; and, in 1983 and 1988, a handful of jobs for DC Comics, including on the military adventure title of Steve Canyon Blackhawk. His last comic book work is pencils and six-page story inking and a two-page character profile, both featuring "Blackhawk Express", at Blackhawk Annual # 1 (1989).

Artists courtroom and other jobs

Rockwell also works as a courtroom artist doing experimental sketches, beginning with the US Supreme Court case of 1957 involving school desegregation in Little Rock, Arkansas. His courtroom work was still a minor side job until 1983. Rockwell covered the robbery and murder of members of the Weather Underground and Black Liberation Army who had robbed a Brinks armored truck in Nyack, New York.

Like his legendary uncle, Rockwell also did magazine illustrations. In addition, he drew editorial cartoons, taught at New York University, Parsons School of Design, and Fashion Institute of Technology, all in Manhattan, New York City.
