Still Rising: American African Graphic History is a pictorial and historical-cultural narrative that records the struggles and victories of African Americans. This book was published by Sterling Publishing in February 2009. Written together by husband and wife team, Roland Laird and Taneshia Nash Laird, with preface by Charles R. According to Charles Johnson, winner of the National Book Award, Still I Rise is the first African-American history that is primarily cartoon or graphic. This book has been compared to the style of cartoonists Art Spiegelman and Larry. Gonick is applied to African American history. Johnson said the first edition, "Infesting this encyclopaedic research... recognizes the beauty, endurance, and spiritual resilience of black Americans."

The previous edition of A Graphic History is Still I Rise: A Cartoon History of African Americans . Summary

The flow of the book centers around the fact that many African contracted employees, once in America, prove to be highly skilled - even more so than many of their European counterparts. This book tells the story of how these maids went on to buy their indenture contracts, creating a whirlwind counterattack that resulted in a contract extension. As tensions between Africans and Europeans grew, this eventually led in 1676 to the Bacon Uprising, which led to slavery being the official law in all colonies. The book then takes the reader from the end of American slavery, through the Reconstruction and Civil Rights Movement to President Barack Obama's nomination. The central theme that exists throughout the narrative is the resilience, creativity, and fortitude of African-Americans through almost insurmountable obstacles.

Criticism

Although Draper offers positive comments on the Still I Rise edition, he criticizes the first edition, arguing that "the illustrations are flat...," and that "characters vary widely from panel to panel..."

The Weekly Publishers say that, while this book is worth reading, "... the entire book is damaged by amateur artworks." Bey's artists only show the most basic basic visual storytelling techniques, the layout is careless, with the hands and heads often disconnected, and the style of graphittiesque art/cartoony is not appropriate for the material It is disappointing that a work of history with the potential of cross attraction gets bent down by the underlying visuals that belittle the text. Part of the book bore so little visual gravity that it came as a coloring book of blacks struggle, and it was embarrassing. "

A review of the Library Journal says the illustrations are "often simple."
