Well Loved Tales is a series of re-stories of fairy tales and other traditional stories published by Ladybird between 1964 and the early 1990s. The books are labeled "readable" and are judged on aspects such as their length, complexity, and vocabulary. Most of the stories in this series are based on stories by Hans Christian Andersen, Brothers Grimm and Charles Perrault, along with a number of traditional British folklore such as Jack and the Beanstalk and The Three Small Pigs . The first title in the series is Cinderella , and over the next decade, twenty-seven titles have been published, all written by Vera Southgate. In 1979, with the publication of The Ugly Duckling , Pinocchio and Tom Thumb. in series, display and book format changed. The books now universally feature a green spine and back cover, as well as a standard logo. The series also broke with the Ladybird tradition of having the left page just text and the right page just a picture, and the illustrations become more stylish than previous editions. Old titles gradually illustrated over the years. Under this new look, even more titles are retold by different editors and authors to be added during the 1980s, with popular stories including Hansel and Gretel , Little Mermaids and The Wizard of Oz .

The series gradually came out of print in the early 1990s, but the current series "Ladybird Tales" has reused some of the original Well Loved Tales texts.

Reception

The titles in the series are translated into many different languages including Arabic, German, and French. Finally sales in the series sold over 80 million copies worldwide. Old books have been known to pick up high prices in the used-goods market; for example, the first edition of "Cinderella" with a dust jacket has been known for use as much as Ã, Â £ 150.

Perhaps due to the nostalgia for some of the previous titles in the series, later editions with more stylish illustrations are often held by some with lesser attention. Equally, the original editions of the 1960s and 1970s have been criticized for its illustrations for being inanimate and leaving little to the imagination. Equally, some have raised concerns over drastically summarizing more stories such as Pinocchio and the right to retell a clear literary tale with clear writers such as Hans Christian Andersen.
